Gratitude Practice: The Penny Technique

 

Betsi shared a fun and powerful gratitude technique I’ll share here. If expressing gratitude doesn’t come naturally to you, or you simply want to improve, get 10 pennies and put them in the right pocket of your pants. Then, every time you express gratitude to a teammate move a coin from the right pocket to the left. Once your right pocket is empty, you know you’ve shared 10 expressions of gratitude!

As you gather with family, friends, and colleagues during the Thanksgiving season, take a moment to consider where gratitude has guided your leadership this year and where it might take you next.

 

Reflect on these questions:

 

1. Where have I seen gratitude create growth in myself, my team, or my business?

 

2. Who deserves my appreciation but may not have heard it lately?

 

3. How can I make gratitude a daily discipline, not just a seasonal reminder?

 

Gratitude is not simply a seasonal gesture. When it combines with a way of leading, it can be a daily discipline in expressing gratitude with our peers, co-workers and customers. It transforms not only what we achieve, but also how we experience the day. A culture of gratitude, where everyone openly expresses gratitude empowers trust, collaboration, communication and a solution mindset.
